Letters to the Next President:
the Video Campaign
Building on the strong teacher and student response to the Letters to the Next President: Writing Our Future campaign launched this fall by the National Writing Project and Google Docs (over 6,000 young people have participated so far), this new video campaign, sponsored by the National Writing Project and the Pearson Foundation, empowers young filmmakers to create and broadcast digital films that can be shared in classrooms across the nation. Registered teachers and their classes are invited to create short videos in a form of their choosing – PSAs, digital stories, interviews, animations, short films – and publish them to the Letters to the Next President site as part of the growing national conversation on the election, civic literacies, student voice and the future of this country.
Like the earlier Letters to the Next President: Writing Our Future campaign, Letters to the Next President: The Video Campaign is open to all young people whose teachers first register their classroom’s participation. Deadline for registration is March 27, 2009; teachers will be able to begin posting their classes’ projects to the Letters to the President website, www.letters2president.org, in early April, in anticipation of a spring showcase and celebration of student work highlighting writing and video created by the youth across the country.
Teachers are encouraged to make use published student work on this site as springboards for their students’ video efforts. (See the Resources and the Registration section below for more information.)
